Knock Down, Knock Down for Jesus

Knock Down, Knock Down for Jesus appears on East Side Story

Sid Says:

"This is the song of the Boxing Booths, who was a militant branch of the Salvation Army.  They used to go about beating people up for Jesus.  They went from street to street, knocking on people's faces - it was called the 'laying on of hands', I think.  Anyhow, they were never very successful, due to having an awful band.  Well, you try playing the trumpet with boxing gloves on.  They was made illegal some years ago, but even that couldn't make them popular, so you never get them about nowadays."

Knock down, knock down for Jesus, we'll stop the sinners' fun,

And with our combinations we will show them three in one;

Like butterflies we'll float, but we'll sting like bees as well,

Till all the souls of sinners have been saved by the bell.

We'll march unto the ale house, where Courage we will take;

If hearts we wish to conquer, then heads we first must break.

From Knapton up to Sheringham we'll fight from town to town;

Before the dead can rise up, we must knock the living down.

We'll dig up all the hatchets, and turn ploughshares into swords,

For sticks and stones will break their bones, so why waste breath on words?

With palms we'll raise husannas, with knuckles we'll raise lumps;

And if they turn the other cheek, the other cheek we'll thump.

Now with our bible boots on we will march for all we're worth,

For if it's left to them alone the meek would lose the earth.

Let every day be Boxing Day, we'll win the dialogue,

All with the cross of Jesus and the uppercut of God.

But rest not on your laurels, there is more that must be done

The fight will not be over till the bible belt is won.

Gird on the gloves of glory, slough off the shirt of sin,

Pull on the gospel jock strap, till all is gathered in.
